In downtown Oita, you can find many buildings designed by world-renowned architect Arata Isozaki. Bronze statues of leading Japanese architects are also placed in parks and at street corners. Let's walk through the streets of Oita.

This area is good for a walk. You can visit specific facilities you have in mind or enjoy a casual stroll. This is the best place to spend a fun and relaxing time when you have some spare time before your train arrives.



[About Wakakusa Park]
True to its theme "flowers" this park is a vast expanse of flower beds, trees and grass. Visitors can see a wide variety of seasonal flowers. On sunny days, local residents, some with lunch boxes, come to the park to enjoy a relaxing picnic.

[About the Portuguese Ship Monument]
Located in Takemachi Dome Square, at the crossing of the Chuo-cho Shopping Mall and the Galleria Takemachi, this monument was set up by the Oita City government to commemorate the 450th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Portugal. Various events are held around this reproduction of a Portuguese ship.

[About Oasis 21]
The tallest building in the prefecture, Oasis 21 is a landmark in downtown Oita. If you need a little break after a walk, why not go up to the sky lounge on the 21st floor, the top floor of the building, for a cup of tea? At night, the lounge turns into a bar, and is one of the most popular places among young people.

[About Jungle Park]
Located in the center of Miyako-machi, the most popular eating and drinking district in Oita, Jungle Park is an urban oasis attracting many people with its restful shade during the daytime. The park is also loved, especially by adults, for its night-time dreamy atmosphere with a combination of cascading water and fantastic lights.

[About Art Plaza]
One of the buildings designed by Arata Isozaki, Art Plaza comprising on three floors the Citizensユ Gallery and other facilities on the 1st and 2nd floors. The 3rd floor contains Arata Isozaki Exhibition Room. If you need a coffee break, why not go to "Art Brother" a coffee shop on the 1st floor? In Oita Prefectural Office square, located a 3-minute walk away from Art Plaza, is [Heisei-no-To (Tower of the Heisei Era)] another architecturally important building designed by Arata Isozaki.

[About Funai Castle Site/Roka-bashi (Hallway Bridge)]
Funai Castle was built by Fukuhara Naotaka, the husband of Ishida Mitsunariユs sister, in 1599. In 1743, most of the castle was burned down by a massive fire. In 1965, towers connected to the main compound of the castle, namely, the chakuto yagura and the niju yagura that are connected to the higashinomaru (eastern compound), and the niju yagura that are connected to the nishinomaru (western compound), as well as the otemon (the main gate to the castle), were rebuilt. In 1996, the roka-bashi (hallway bridge) connecting the nishinomaru and the yamazato kuruwa (entertainment quarter) was rebuilt. The area around the castle site functions as a park. Known for the beauty of its cherry blossoms, the park provides citizens with opportunities to enjoy cherry-flower-viewing parties in spring.

[About Yuho Park]
Stretching long and narrow across the street from the Oita Prefectural Office building, Yuho Park is scattered with many sculptures of historical characters and events related to Oita Prefecture. The sculptures include statues of Rentaro Taki, a composer of genius (who produced a number of immortal pieces such as "Kojo-no-Tsuki (Moon over the Ruined Castle)" and the Jesuit missionary Francisco Xavier. The park functions as a venue for [Oita Fantasy] a major winter attraction in Oita City.

[About Funai Gobangai (Funai 5th Avenue)]
Funai Gobangai stretches from Yuho Park to the street in front of the station. With its granite stone pavement, bronze sculptures, clock tower and fashionable shops, it is a good place both for a casual walk and shopping.

[About Funai Aqua Park]
With "water" as its theme, Funai Aqua Park is designed to symbolize the passage of time and the beginning and end of the universe. An accessible, spacious place with beautifully arranged water and many benches; the park attracts a lot of visitors who seek to enjoy refreshing moments.

[About Oita Bank Red Brick Building]
Originally designed to function as the head office of former Nijusan Ginko (The 23rd National Bank), construction of this building started in September 1910 and was finished in April 1913. In 1945, the entire building all but a portion of its walls was burned down as a result of fires caused by air strikes. After its reconstruction in 1949, the building functioned as the head office of Oita Bank. The building was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, known for his designs of numerous buildings of the Meiji era, including Tokyo Station and the main office of the former Bank of Japan.
