In this half-day car tour, you can see both old and new sites, including Yusuhara Hachiman Shrine, the most prominent shrine in the Bungo region, as well as newly built waterfront facilities in the Nishi-Oita Port area.

Unlike the other tourist spots included in this route, this area is good to explore on foot. You can visit specific facilities you have in mind or enjoy a casual stroll. This is the best place to spend a fun and relaxing time when you have some spare time before your train arrives.

[About Jingujiura nanban boeki (trade with Europe) monument]
Otomo Sorin, who later became known as a Christian feudal lord, invited the Jesuit missionary Francisco Xavier to meet him. Otomo later converted to Christianity and dispatched a mission of four young Japanese boys to the palace of Pope Gregory XIII. Otomo actively incorporated Western culture and ideas in his city development projects. As a result, Oita in those days experienced dramatic growth, and became the place to communicate Western culture to other parts of Japan.

[About Yusuhara Hachiman Shrine] (Insert text from the Oita City's website)
Located on a hill about 3 kilometers to the southwest of Nishi Oita Station, Yusuhara Hachiman Shrine is believed to have been built in 827 A.D. As a branch shrine of Usa Shrine, Yusuhara Hachiman had long been worshipped by both imperial and samurai families. According to the shrine records, Minamoto-no-Noriyori offered a prayer to this shrine in 1184 for victory in the war with the Taira clan. Gorgeous images of dragons, flowers, birds and fish are carved on the underside of the eaves, the columns and walls of the two-storied gate situated in the approach to the shrine. Because it is possible to spend the whole day just looking at these images, without feeling bored or tired, the gate is also called "Higurashi-no-mon (meaning a "gate from sunrise till sunset").
